KILLING THE PAIN: understanding Heroin, Fentanyl, prescription and OTC painkillers

Course Overview

This course tackles the current issues relating to the use and abuse of both legal and illegal opiate painkillers. Using the latest research, the course examines the changing patterns of Heroin and fentanyl use, physical and mental health issues, substitute prescribing and important harm reduction strategies.

As well as exploring options for helping clients who are dependent on illegal opiates the course also explores the increasing abuse of Over the Counter painkillers such as Codeine and Solpadeine.

The course is suitable for all staff who require up to date information and advice on current issues relating to opiate use and how to work with clients who may be using them.

What you will learn

  • To explore the history, production and popularity of heroin and synthetic and medicinal opiate painkillers.
  • To examine the mechanisms of action of opiate painkillers on the brain.
  • To understanding how opiate addiction can develop and be able to identify the signs of dependency.
  • To explore the issues and dangers associated with the emergence of synthetic illicit opiates such as Fentanyl and Carfentanyl.
  • To identify the key harm reduction strategies – particularly for injecting users.
  • To help delegates develop a clear understanding of how to most effectively assist those clients who wish to stop using opiates – including options for medication.

Course materials

Each participant will receive the ‘Understanding Addiction’ course information book and  a copy of the presentation materials used on the day.

Delivery options

    1. Fully interactively via Zoom enabling delegates to join from wherever they are. The  Zoom training has all the qualities of in person training  – group work, video case studies, Q and A thouroughout – but at a reduced cost and with no travel/accomodation expenses. The course usually lasts from 9.15a.m. to 1.15p.m. for those booking the course for in-house staff training the timings can be adapted to suit your particular needs and requirements.
    2. Face to Face Delivery at your own venue. The timings can be adapted to suit your particular needs and requirements.

    This course is available as an In-House training course for your staff team and as an Open Course if you want to book an individual or small group onto a multiagency course.
