DEALING WITH DOWNERS: understanding Xanax, Benzodiazepines, Pregablin and other sedating drugs

Course Overview

This course examines the recent explosion in the use of sedative and anti-anxiety drugs – especially Xanax, ‘street benzo’s’, Pregablin and GHB/GBL.

The session explores the reasons why so many people are turning to these drugs, the risks involved and practical issues around harm reduction advice. In particular the course explores the real dangers involved in mixing depressant drugs together and the so-called ‘Overdose Triangle.’

The course is suitable for all staff who require up to date information and advice on current issues relating to benzo/sedative use and how to work with clients who may be using them.

  • To explore the history, production and popularity of Xanax, Benzodiazepines and other sedating drugs such as GHB and Gabapentin/Pregablin.
  • To examine the mechanisms of action of these drugs on the brain.
  • To understand the increasing popularity of various sedative/depressant drugs.
  • To understanding how Benzodiazepines, Pregablin and other sedating drugs can lead to dependency.
  • To explore the issues and dangers associated with mixing sedating drugs together and the Overdose Triangle.
  • To identify the reasons behind the growing problem of ‘online Valium’.
  • To help delegates provide clear, practical harm reduction advice to clients who are using sedative drugs.

Each participant will receive the course information book and a copy of the presentation materials used on the day.

Delivery options

    1. Fully interactively via Zoom enabling delegates to join from wherever they are. The  Zoom training has all the qualities of in person training  – group work, video case studies, Q and A thouroughout – but at a reduced cost and with no travel/accomodation expenses. The course usually lasts from 9.15a.m. to 1.15p.m. for those booking the course for in-house staff training the timings can be adapted to suit your particular needs and requirements.
    2. Face to Face Delivery at your own venue. The timings can be adapted to suit your particular needs and requirements.
