MENTAL ILLNESS AND SUBSTANCE USE: understanding the complex relationship

Course Overview

Dual diagnosis is a term used to describe co-existing mental health and substance misuse problems. It is also called dual disorder or co-morbidity.

This course examines the complex interaction between drug and alcohol use and mental illness such as anxiety disorders, severe depression, psychosis and schizophrenia. The course explores how specific drugs affect brain chemistry and may exacerbate pre-existing conditions.

The course is suitable for staff who work with clients who use substances and have mental health conditions and who require a better understanding of how to support those with a ‘dual diagnosis’.
