UNDERSTANDING ADDICTION: the power of psychology and physiology combined

Course Overview

This course draws upon the most up to date research to explore the complex issue of addiction. The course examines the physiological, psychological, emotional and societal factors linked to the development of drug and alcohol dependency and other types of compulsive behaviours.

The course is suitable for all staff who require a better understanding of the addictive process and how they may be better able to assist their clients who are experiencing addiction.

What you will learn

  • To develop a clear definition of addiction.
  • To understand the differences between physical and psychological dependency.
  • To examine the role that brain chemistry plays in the development of addiction.
  • To explore the risk factors for addiction including genetic and environmental factors.
  • To understand the psychology of the addictive process and relapse.
  • To explore the options for recovery and overcoming addiction.

Course materials

Each participant will receive the ‘Understanding Addiction’ course information book and a copy of the presentation materials used on the day.

Interactive Delivery options

  1. Via Zoom.  Fully interactively with all of the qualities of in person training – group work, video case studies,  Q and A throughout – but at a reduced cost and without the need for travel and accomodation expenses. The length of the course is usually 9.15 a.m. – 13.15 p.m. but for those booking the course for in-house staff training the timings can be adapted to suit your particular needs and requirements.
  2. Face to Face Delivery at your own venue. The timings can be adapted to suit your particular needs and requirements.

This course is available as an In-House training course for your staff team and as an Open Course if you want to book an individual or small group onto a multiagency course.
